Simi Valley, California is one of the most popular locations in the world for filming porn, but that may be about to change. On Monday, April 23, the Simi Valley City Council passed an ordinance which would require all pornographic performers to use condoms and/or dental dams during sex acts. A similar law was passed in Los Angeles in January.
The Simi Valley mayor announced that the motives behind the new law are twofold: firstly, it is for the health and safety of performers, and secondly, the city’s residents are getting tired of living in the porn capital of America. Many health organisations have been lobbying for condoms to be used more frequently in porn, but until it was made law, this was a recommendation porn companies tended to ignore. They claim that sales are affected by condom use because they turn the viewers off.
Of course, the pro-condom side of the argument insists that a bit of lost revenue is better than endangered lives. Most reputable companies require their talent to be tested for HIV every 30 days or so, a measure which they deem sufficient to protect the performers. However, since 1985, porn stars have regularly been succumbing to AIDS, as well as contracting myriad other diseases that could possibly have been prevented with condom use.
