Porn webmasters cross their fingers for ICANN’s domain announcement
Posted by: EmperorYogi
ICANN – the internet authority that gets to allocate new top-level domain names – is announcing the names of over 1900 companies who applied for new TLDs today.
Ranging from .sucks to .porn to .sex, the porn industry has a big involvement in the announcement. A new top-level domain like .sex could send webmasters scrambling to pick up domains in that category. These new domain types will exist alongside more commonly known naming systems like .com, .org, .co.uk, and .net.
The adult film industry isn’t the only one who applied for new top-level domains. Countries have also attempted to leave their permanent mark on the internet. Companies representing Wales and Scotland, for example, have applied for .wales and .scot, respectively.
Google is also getting in on the action. The internet search giant applied for .google, .gmail, .youtube, and .hangout.
If you’re already regretting the fact that you didn’t send in a domain request, then don’t get too down on yourself. The application itself cost nearly $200,000. That money will not be refunded to those who weren’t able to secure a domain listing.
ICANN’s announcement is currently taking place in New York. Check out their official website for the latest information about the new top-level domain listings.
