Want to upload porn on the internet? Don’t use Microsoft SkyDrive

Posted by: EmperorYogi

Cloud storage is a popular way to maintain access to files from anywhere in the world. Some people use cloud storage to store family photos, while others use it to hold their favorite songs. And some people use it to store their porn.

Well, those of you who like storing porn on cloud storage systems should avoid using Microsoft SkyDrive. The software giant’s terms of conduct forbid the upload of pornography and any nude or partially nude images.

SkyDrive offers both public folders and private folders through its SkyDrive cloud storage system. Public folders can be seen by anybody, while private folders are password protected. Interestingly enough, porn is not allowed in either type of folder.

This clause has apparently existed in SkyDrive’s code of conduct for quite some time, but it was recently exposed in detail earlier this week. When pressed for comment, Microsoft argued the “child pornography” route, claiming that it wanted to limit the distribution of illegal content and maintain SkyDrive as a safe, legal presence around the world.

Of course, many are wondering if that means Microsoft is actively scanning its private folders for any type of pornography. This would be bad if, say, someone uploaded naked photos of themselves onto their cloud storage system. Would you want Microsoft peeping into your personal documents?

When asked to comment on user privacy, Microsoft said it reserves the right to remove content from its servers, but that all content is being scanned automatically as opposed to being perused by some nerdy Microsoft employee. It also played the old “we take our customers’ privacy very seriously” card, just like every other company that has been caught doing something like this.

It’s not all doom and gloom for you cloud storage porn fanatics out there. Popular services like Google Drive and DropBox have no rules banning pornographic images, so feel free to upload anything (except illegal pornography) onto their servers.
