Australia’s new R18+ rating makes it easy to find porn video games
Posted by: EmperorYogi
Australia announced the creation of a new adult category under its video game rating system. Claimed to be over a decade in the making, the new rating will make it easy for people to distinguish between video games that are just violent and those that are filled with nudity and sexual content.
The new R18+ rating will help video game users distinguish between ‘mature’ video games and those that feature restricted content – like sex or nudity.
Previously in Australia, the highest rating given to a video game was MA15+, which means that you would have to be 15 or older in order to purchase an adult video game.
This limited rating meant that overseas mature-rated games were either banned or classified at a lower rating than they actually were. For example, games that would have been M-rated (17 or older) in North America would be either banned or MA15+ in Australia.
Home Affairs Minister Jason Clare claims that these reforms are “over 10 years in the making.” Does it really take that long for a law to get through Australia’s system?
As of now, the ESRB (North America’s rating system) only has one adult rating available: M for Mature. While the reason behind the rating can be found on the back of the case, the rating itself doesn’t distinguish between violent video games, nudity, or sexual content. All games of an adult nature simply receive an ‘M’.
