Lara Roxx documentary exposes the darker side of the porn industry
Posted by: EmperorYogi

It’s big news any time a porn star is revealed to have HIV. In 2004, actress Lara Roxx contracted the virus, temporarily halting production in the Los Angeles porn industry. Today, a documentary called “Inside Lara Roxx” reveals some of the struggles the young woman went through before, during, and after that episode of her life.
The documentary begins with Roxx and two other porn actresses contracting HIV from male porn star Darren James. As you may or may not remember, this episode set off a wave of controversy around the Los Angeles porn industry.
Anytime an HIV outbreak hits the porn industry, it is big news. Despite these instances being few and far between, media outlets love to make a big deal out of it and implicate the industry as a whole. In a world where the media likes to make mountains out of molehills, it’s easy to see how Lara Roxx’s story – and her life itself – quickly spiralled out of control.
However, by the time the credits roll, audiences realize that the Lara Roxx documentary isn’t about the porn industry. Instead, it’s a portrait of a troubled young woman who has dealt with serious psychological issues for her entire life. At times, it’s very sad, but you have to appreciate a film that approaches serious subject matter with such honesty and authenticity. It doesn’t skirt around the subject matter, and that’s a good thing.
After a limited release around Quebec, Canada, the film has already been nominated for that province’s prestigious Jutra Award for Best Documentary, a rare honor for an English-language documentary. No word yet on when (or if) it’s going to spread to a wider range of theaters.
